Weather is one of the safest conversation topics in any country, and Luxembourg is no exception. For learners of Luxembourgish, being able to comment naturally on rain, sun, or temperature is both practical in daily life and directly relevant to the Sproochentest.

During the oral exam, candidates are often asked to engage in small talk or to respond to everyday questions. “How is the weather today?” may sound simple, but it is a common way to test whether you can sustain a natural conversation.

Core weather vocabulary

  • It’s raining: Et reent.

  • It’s snowing: Et schneit.

  • It’s windy: Et ass wandëg.

  • It’s sunny: D’Sonn schéngt.

  • It’s cloudy: Et ass wollekeg.

  • It’s cold/hot: Et ass kal. / Et ass waarm.

Useful expressions:

  • “Et ass kal fir d’Joereszäit.” — It is cold for the season.

  • “Ech mengen, et kënnt gläich ze reenen.” — I think it’s about to rain.

Typical conversation patterns

In Luxembourg, the weather often serves as a polite opener, especially with neighbors or colleagues:

  • “Moien, et ass haut richteg kal, oder?”

  • “Jo, an d’Sonn kënnt guer net eraus.”

These short exchanges are easy to prepare, but they demonstrate that you can interact socially — which is precisely what the oral examiner looks for.

A small learner anecdote

One candidate recalled that in their first mock exam they confused “Et ass waarm” (It is warm) with “Et ass arm” (He is poor). The examiner smiled, but it showed how even small pronunciation issues can change meaning. This illustrates why practicing aloud, not only reading silently, is so important.

Why it matters for the Sproochentest

Weather conversations test basic vocabulary, sentence structure, and the ability to respond naturally. In our 10 full Sproochentest simulations, we integrate weather-related dialogues so that candidates can practice these exchanges until they feel automatic.

Beyond the exam

Discussing the weather might feel trivial, but it is one of the quickest ways to build small connections in Luxembourgish daily life. At the same time, remember that the Sproochentest is only one requirement for citizenship. The other is the Vivre-Ensemble test, which covers Luxembourg’s society and institutions — more information is available at vivre-ensemble.lu.
